Why Patna's Groundwater Needs More Than a Basic Filter
Much of Patna draws its water from borewells and a municipal supply ultimately linked to the Ganga basin, and water quality here can vary noticeably from one neighbourhood - sometimes one street - to the next. That variability is exactly why a purification plan built around your actual water, rather than a generic one-size-fits-all filter, matters more here than in places with uniformly treated municipal supply.
Hardness and iron are the most common complaints
The issues we hear about most often from households and businesses across Patna are hard water - scale building up on taps, geysers and RO membranes faster than expected - and excess iron, which shows up as a metallic taste, a faint smell, or reddish-brown staining in sinks and on white clothes.
Neither of these is usually dangerous in the way contamination is, but both shorten the life of your appliances and your purifier's own filter stages if the system wasn't designed to handle them.
Some belts across Bihar have documented arsenic and fluoride concerns
Groundwater in parts of the wider Gangetic plain in Bihar has been flagged in public health studies over the years for elevated arsenic or fluoride in specific pockets - a well-known regional concern, not unique to any one locality. It doesn't mean every borewell is affected, but it is exactly why we recommend testing your specific source rather than assuming it's fine (or assuming it isn't) based on area alone.
This is also why we don't recommend buying a purifier based on a neighbour's recommendation without checking your own water first - two borewells a few hundred metres apart can test very differently.
What this means for your purification choice
A sediment and carbon pre-filtration stage ahead of the RO membrane protects against hardness-driven scaling and improves taste and odour. The membrane stage itself is what handles dissolved salts, excess fluoride and, where present, heavier contaminants. Depending on your water's mineral profile, a remineralisation or post-filter stage keeps the output tasting the way it should rather than flat.
None of this is a one-time decision, either - water quality in a given source can shift over months, which is why we treat the initial TDS test and periodic rechecks as part of the service, not a one-off sales pitch.
If you've never actually had your water tested - whether it's borewell or municipal supply - that's the right place to start before choosing (or replacing) a purifier. We offer a free site assessment and water test across Patna; call us and we'll walk you through what your water actually needs.
